Lyrics written by Ireland's novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham. Music written by Norway's Rolf Løvland who approached Graham to write the lyrics after having read Graham's novels. It was first intended to be an instrumental called "Silent Story".
Originally performed by Løvland's New Age band, "Secret Garden" in 2001.
The best known version was done by Josh Groban. Westlife, an Irish pop band remade the song (officially the 100th cover!) in 2005 and it soared to #1 in the UK. It has been recorded in at least 20 different languages. The melody is a variation of the 1910 standard "Danny Boy", (same tune as the "Londonderry Air") an Irish classic.(note the opening phrase of the chorus)

Il Divo recorded a Spanish version using Westlife's instrumentation: "Por Ti Seré". It was also recorded in Spanish by Paul Potts. Åsa Jinderwrote the lyrics for the Swedish version: "Rör vid min själ" and it was performed by Sanna Nielsen. Recorded in Japanese by Korean-American singer Lena Park, it was used as the opening theme to a Japanese TV Anime series called "Romeo x Juliet".
It was covered by Christian group Selah in 2004, Celtic Woman, Michael Ball, the Celtic Tenors with Samantha Mumba (a little R & B number), Daniel Beck, O'Neill Brothers, Kenny G, and Phil Coulter adn many, many more!
